Participants were told Nina Hamnett's life story as presented in her autobiography Laughing Torso - Reminiscences of Nina Hamnett (1932), and other research from a number of sources. Interviewees were then asked to comment upon it and create an image without seeing Fry's portrait that they felt represented her. They were then told how Hamnett was subject to much public attention and her hedonistic lifestyle was often criticised, while her artistic career was, and still is, little acknowledged. Participants were further told of Hamnett's tragic death.
